Warm Springs Grantee Spotlight: Alamo Head Injury Association

Brown paper lunch bags and small vases with yellow flowers are on the tables. In the background are posters of medical professionals and a banner about nationally recognized care

Every month, we shine a light on one of the incredible organizations Warm Springs Foundation supports. This September, our spotlight is on the Alamo Head Injury Association (AHIA), a San Antonio nonprofit that has been building community and offering life-changing support for people living with brain injury in since 1982.

Founded to meet the growing need for post-rehabilitation support, AHIA serves individuals who have sustained traumatic or acquired brain injuries as well as their families and caregivers. Their mission is simple but powerful: improve quality of life by providing education, peer connection, and direct assistance.

Supporting Life After Brain Injury

When medical treatment ends, recovery continues outside the medical facility- and that can be a challenging transition. The emotional, social, and practical challenges of life after a brain injury can be overwhelming. AHIA exists to help people navigate those challenges and to help guide the answer to, “what comes next.”  Through regular in-person and virtual support groups held throughout the year, the organization provides safe and welcoming spaces for survivors of brain injuries and their caregivers to share experiences, learn new skills, and access vital resources at no cost.

Expanding Opportunities and Access

AHIA’s work extends far beyond life-after-injury support. The organization also offers financial grants to help brain injury survivors and their families make home modifications, purchase adaptive equipment, continue their education, or cover other costs that promote independence and quality of life. And each March, AHIA puts on an annual Brain Injury Symposium during Brain Injury Awareness Month, bringing together survivors, families, caregivers, and healthcare professionals for education, training, and community connection.

How Warm Springs Helps

Through our ConnectAbility initiative, the Warm Springs Foundation provides funding that enables AHIA to keep these programs free and accessible, expand its grant offerings, and host educational events like the annual symposium. This partnership ensures that more people affected by brain injury have access to the resources and support they need to thrive.

Looking Ahead

AHIA’s impact continues to grow, and as a result, the reach of our shared mission. Together, we’re making sure that brain injury survivors and the caregivers who walk beside them never face recovery alone. Together, we’re creating life-altering possibilities.
